Do not place tall furniture on carpets or tatami mats. Store heavy items lower to the ground
to keep them from falling. Slightly lean furniture back rather than forward.

Means to contact/places to meet with your family
After a disaster, supply of essentials may stop for a few days. Plan for quantity of stockpiles
and storage for essentials to be taken out in case of emergency.

Earthquake Early Warning
In case when an earthquake of seismic intensity 4 on the scale is predicted in the vicinity of
KEK. Emergency broadcasting EEW (seismic intensity and arrival time) in Japanese will be
played inside of the institute.
Do not panic. secure your head and hide under a strong desk etc. Do not rush outside.

Right after Earthquake
Keep calm. Check all fire sources. Put out fire quickly.
・If you were using any sources of fire or heat, turn them off when the shaking comes down.
・If a fire starts, contact Information Center at 3399. Try to put it out before they arrive, but
do not try to be a hero.
Don't rush out in a panic. Watch out for falling objects.
Secure your head for broken glass, signboards, and evacuate to designated public building
or park. In KEK there are several assenbly areas.
At KEK, emergency broadcasting both in Japanese and English flows after the earthquake
of 4 in the scale of seismic intensity.
Keep away from gateposts and walls.
If you feel an earthquake while being outside, stay away from vending machines etc.
Moves to an evacuation area.
If you escapes safely, let's take refuge in an evacuation area and report safety to a
disaster prevention person. .

After Earthquake
The action after refuge should follows a disaster prevention person's directions.
Outside of the KEK ---------------------------------------------------------
Outdoors
Keep away from vending machines, cement block walls, electric poles, or other hazards.
They are likely to fall over.
Indside of Elevators
If an earthquake occurs while you are using an elevator, press all the floor buttons and get
off immediately on whichever floor it stops. If trapped inside, press an emergency-call
button and wait for help.
In a Mass Retail Shop or Crowded Publicbuilding
・ In a mass retail shop, you should move away from showcases or merchandise shelves that
may fall over, and protect yourself from danger.
・ In a movie theater or other places, you should cover your head with a bag or other things.
Lie flat quickly between the seats, and other places. Find an open space to protect
yourself from falling objects.
Follow the advice of attendants.
If driving a Car
Park your car on the left immediately, listen to the car radio to obtain disaster information,
and do not drive on your own.
In a Underground Mall
・Don't panoc even if the electricity goes out
・Don't rush to stairs or emergency exits. when so many people rush to one place in a hurry,
they are more likely to fall down on the stairs. Follow the advice of attendants.

In a moving Train
・Don't panic, and follow the advice of a train attendant. Don't attempt to exit the train. If there
are train rails nearby, you will be at risk of electrical shock or hit by another train.
In a Coastal area
There is no telling when tsunamis strike. When there are strong tremors near coasts or the
sea, move inland to higher ground immediatety. Don't wait for a tsunami warning to be issued.
Near a Mountain or Cliffs
Move as far away from a mountain or cliffs as possibility if you are near, and evacuate to a
flat and safe area.
Connection of public phones are prioritized during natural disasters.
They can be used for free (excluding international calls)
How to make a call for free:
・ green analog public phones
Press the emergency button, or insert a jyu-en dama (10 yen). Your coin will be returned after
the call.
・ digital public phones
No card/cash necessary, just pick up the receiver.

In case of fire, the best thing you can do it at the KEK Tsukuba Campus;
1. When you notice a fire, get away to safe area and call for help. 2. Call the Information center at ext. 3399 or 029-864-5572 and tell the person 'kaji-desu' which means "fire". Be sure that you are ready to tell the person where the fire is.Tell the guard the name of the building as well as your name. Remain on the phone until the guard confirms that all the pertinent information need for proper action has been obtained. connect you to a fire station. 'kaji desu, basho wa (location) desu. watashino, 3. Press button on a fire alarm nearest to you. Japanese fire alarm on it. You need to break open a plastic cover of the fire alarm button before you can press it. |

When you are sick or injured while you are on-site, contact KEK Information Center at 3399 first, If you are staying in KEK Dormitory, contact a superintendent of Dormitory at 5574 first, and tell them what is wrong with you. Don't forget to tell your name and where you are. They will help you.
Do not try to go to a hospital by yourself, as some hospitals are not capable to handle patients who do not speak Japanese. If you are outside of KEK and get sick or injured, I would recommend you to go to Tukuba Memorial Hospotal (5.2km from KEK) or Tsukuba Medical Center (7.7km from KEK). They can accept patients 24 hours a day if it is an emergency.
Call Information Center at ext. 3399 or 029-864-5572, and tell them what is wrong.
Don't forget to tell your name and where you are.

Emergency outside of KEK: Call for an ambulance by dialing 119 in case of sudden illness or injury.
Please tell at that time, not "Fire" this is an "Emergency" call. Fire and Emergency call are connected to the same number, 119 ( fire station) Please tell your name, phone number and where you are.
Please tell the landmarks near you, in order for them to find you easier.
